Scilla Peruviana

Plant of the week for 05 October 2007

Anyone would presume this plant to originate from Latin America and although it is widely available there it came to this country during the 17th century from South West Europe. It was shipped in a vessel called The Peru and hence the famous botanist Linaeus called it peruviana.
Scilla Peruviana
It is the most showy of all the different Scillas with broad glaucus strap like leaves forming a perfect rosette from which rise large globular umbels of numerous bright blue starry florets. These open in succession thereby extending the flowering time from May into June. The large bulbs should be planted in well drained soil in a sunny position with the nose at ground level. They should not be moved unless clumps become very congested. The best time to do this is during July-August as the bulbs are at rest for only a short time.

They may also be successfully grown in containers and are perfectly hardy in normal weather conditions. However, during severe frosty periods it is advisable to move the container temporarily to a garage or similar place or alternatively protected them with a good layer of sacking but this should be removed as soon as conditions allow.
