A large headed Darwin Hybrid Tulip, Lighting Sun has a marigold orange flower, which, as a form, is the result of cross-breeding Darwin Tulips with the Fosterianas to create a group of Tulips of outstanding beauty. The tallest Darwin Hybrids grow to 60cm, with Lighting Sun growing to 50cm. The also commence flowering in the last weeks of April allowing them to be a good intermediate flower to link the Earlier Species, Singles and Doubles with the later varieties. With larger heads than other garden tulips also comes a more pronounced colour. Sport of Oranjezon 1985
Tulips will thrive in almost any type of soil where there is reasonable drainage. During the growing season they like plenty of moisture but the roots must not stand in water. Be careful not to feed tulips during the growing season as this will produce 'leggy' plants. Plant from October until late December 4 inches deep and approximately 5 to 6 inches apart.
Tulip failures are mostly due to damage by slugs and snails. Apply a slug repellant immediately after planting and repeat at monthly intervals until the plants stand well above the ground.
